Space-saving: Körting supplies compact Vacuum Plants made of graphite to China.
Via its subsidiary company in Peking, China, Körting Hannover AG has supplied eight multi-staged vacuum plants made of graphite to Jiangsu Lihai Chemical Industry Co. Ltd. These space-saving vacuum plants are being applied in fine organic chemistry for producing 26 kt/a benzyl chloride. Production start-up is planned for the beginning of 2014.
„In the process flow there are components which, in parts, are very corrosive, toxic as well as being a health and environmental hazard“, explained Dr. Andreas Hoffmann, Project Engineer at Körting Hannover AG. These components are, amongst others, monochlorobenzene, dichlorobenzene, chloraldehyde, benzyl chloride and hydrogen chloride. „So our customer required particularly corrosion-resistant and operationally reliable plants“, as Dr. Hoffmann stated.
Steam jet vacuum plants made of graphite from Körting Hannover AG fulfil these requirements to a high degree. Especially in the case of chlorides, graphite belongs to the most resistant of materials and, because of the comparatively straightforward construction manner of steam jet ejectors, can be particularly well applied here. „Furthermore, successful leak-tightness tests were carried out even at a slight overpressure, in order to exclude the escape of toxic or irritating gases at/during plant standstill“, reported Dr. Hoffmann.
As the spatial circumstances in the production plant at Jiangsu Lihai Chemical Industry Co. Ltd. are very limited it was necessary to find a space-saving solution. The plant supplied by Körting now combines several condensation stages in one condenser so that each vacuum plant can be installed on a floor space measuring a maximum of 2 x 2m.
On delivery and assembly of the plant made of graphite care was also taken that everything took place smoothly because „one particular characteristic of graphite material is that it is extremely brittle”, said Dr. Hoffmann. Graphite is sensitive to jarring or high forces. Completely assembled plants were supplied in order to avoid corresponding errors during assembly in the production plant - whereby expansion joints were attached to the graphite nozzles at each limit of supply. These prevent external forces and moments from direct attacks on the graphite. For dispatch purposes too, a special bedding on shock absorbers as well as vibration sensors on the transport cases is very important. In the meantime, the plants have been delivered to the customer in perfect condition. „Everything ran off smoothly“, added Dr. Hoffmann. And the customer himself said most positively: „We are very happy with the tailor-made solution Körting supplied to us. It fits into our works perfectly“, reported a speaker of Jiangsu Lihai Chemical Industry Co. Ltd. „The graphite parts were easily installed and we are convinced that so we will be able to start up production at the beginning of 2014.”
